GoPro “Chesty” Chest Mount Harness
The GoPro chesty is one of our favourite mounts for skiing use, and we think it has a number of advantages over the head mount set up. First and foremost, being that bit lower means that you capture the tips of your skis and your arm/pole movements. This tends to give the video much more context and showcases what you’re actually doing, whereas the head mount can give the impression that you’re floating over the snow. Secondly, your chest seems to provide a much more stable filming platform than your head. Whereas your head moves from side to side and up and down all the time, your torso tends to stay at a similar level and generally faces down the slope. Also, because the GoPro is that bit closer to the ground, the effect of the scenery rushing past is amplified and everything looks a bit faster and more intense.
Then there are some other benefits – the GoPro is much easier to access to change shooting modes or check if it is running.
It also must be said that we think it looks less dorky than when it’s perched on the front of your head! It’s also possible to put the Chesty under your ski jacket, and just unzip the jacket when you want to get filming.
A good example of the kind of footage you can get with the GoPro Chest Mount Harness is here:
